Do you have a small home? Maybe a tiny bedroom apartment where you can’t open the closet without hitting the bed, or a guest room so cluttered you wouldn’t even let your mother-in-law stay there? Furnishing a small space can force us to be smart about how we’re living.
We can help you make the most of your space. Here are a few ways to keep a small space looking big and beautiful.
Floor space is your most valuable possession. Try changing around some pieces of furniture. Move big pieces of furniture from one room to another. Maybe move that home entertainment center from the living room to the den, or move the china cabinet from the dining room to the living room. Or maybe it’s time for some fresh, new furnishings that fit your space better.
What’s the first thing you see when you walk into the room? Is there so much stuff that you don’t know where to look first? Walking into your home from the point of view of a stranger can help shed light on where there’s too much or where things might look empty.
Clear that clutter! Is there any empty surface in the room, or is there stuff everywhere? Aim to have an empty table or shelf somewhere for your eye to rest and not be looking at more stuff. Moving things around on your walls from room to room really can give your house and your rooms a completely different and remodeled look.
Keep Colors Similar…Sometimes. In a small space you can certainly mix patterns and colors but be careful to stay within a chosen palette so that each part of the space is seamless with the next. Visually, this prevents the space from being chopped up and feeling small. If you want a big and spacious look in your room you should have a white ceiling. However, if you want to try something different and experiment with making your rooms feel totally different, try painting your ceilings the color of an accent wall in the room!
Use the light. If space is bright, Your room will feel bigger. Remember 3 points of light in each room is optimal, though you can do more. Keep windows clean and try to open up your shades during the brightest part of the day.
Go Vertical! Something as simple as hanging artwork instead of having it leaned up on top of a dresser can bring the eye up and make space feel expansive!
You can have a beautiful home. At Eggers, we will show you how.
